Soccer Warm Up Drills
The purpose of this drill is to get the team warmed up while simultaneously improving their touch and ball mastery.
The drill is set up using four cones placed approximately 10-15 metres apart to form a square.
On the whistle, the players dribble the ball within the grid whilst trying to avoid their team mates
Allow for 3-5 minutes dribbling within the grid and always encourage and praise EFFORT.
Ensure all players look up to avoid their team mates by dribbling past them.
After the first 5 minutes, stop the drill and start to stretch.
Introduce the first ACTION which will be “Toe Tapping” on the coach’s whistle.
Toe Taps- tapping the ball lightly between the inside toe parts of the feet. Basically touching the ball, left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.
Start the drill again and allow up to 30 second intervals before blowing the whistle for Toe Tapping.
Blow the whistle and count up to 10 whilst the players are TTing.
Repeat these intervals for the next 3-5 minutes.
Stop and stretch again.
Next ACTION to be introduced will be the side passes (left to right with the instep this time) also known as the “Ticky Tacky”
Start the drill again and give instructions at 15-30 second intervals alternating between dribbling, TTing and Ticky Tacky.
Continue the drill for 3-5 minutes.
Stretch again…
The last addition to this warm up drill will be a “Change Direction” on the whistle.
Start the drill again and allow them to dribble in the grid.
After short intervals, run your players through TTing, TTy and on the whistle, get them to CD as quickly as they can.
By now the players will be warm and ready to get stuck into training.
