Developing soccer drills for eight-year-olds can be difficult…
You need to find the right balance of fun and foundational skill building.
Too technical and you run the risk of extinguishing their enthusiasm… too easy and the foundational skills you want to develop will disappear into the distance.
So how do you make every drill count?
Every smile preserved whilst constructing drills that serve a dual purpose of developing soccer skills and ensuring the passion for the game still flickers.
Merging playfulness with purpose, every kick and giggle become a stepping stone towards mastery and love for the game.
U8 Soccer Drill- Dribble Through the Jungle
Objective: Improve dribbling and ball control.
- Set up a grid with cones (the “jungle”).
- Players must dribble through the jungle without touching the cones.
- Challenge them by asking to use only left or right foot or avoiding “snakes” (ropes laid on the ground).
U8 Soccer Drills- Dribbling Through Gates
- Objective: Improve dribbling skills.
- Setup: Create several small gates using cones in a grid.
- Activity: Players dribble the ball through the gates in various directions.
- Variation: Time them and see how many gates they can dribble through in a given time.
U8 Soccer Drill- Passing Pairs
- Objective: Develop basic passing skills.
- Setup: Players pair up and face each other.
- Activity: They pass the ball back and forth, focusing on using the inside of their foot.
- Variation: Gradually increase the distance between pairs as they get comfortable.
- Variation: Pass the ball to each other in the air.
Soccer Drill- Red Light- Green Light
- Objective: Ball control and listening skills.
- Setup: Players line up with balls at their feet.
- Activity: Coach shouts “Green Light” (players dribble) and “Red Light” (players stop ball with foot).
- Variation: Use different colored cones or commands for varied actions.
U8 Soccer Drill- Shooting Stars
- Objective: Improve shooting technique.
- Setup: Small goals or target areas are set up.
- Activity: Players take turns shooting towards the goal/target from a set distance.
- Variation: Vary the distance and angle of shots.
- Variation: Add bouncers on the outside of the playing area to facilitate a one-two pass and shot at goals.
U8 Soccer Drill- Pirate Ship
- Objective: Encourage spatial awareness and dribbling.
- Setup: Designate a playing area (the “ship”) and have players (“pirates”) with balls.
- Activity: Coach shouts commands like “Starboard” (RED) or “Port” (YELLOW), and players dribble in that direction.
- Variation: Add “Sharks” (coaches) who try to steal balls from pirates.
U8 Soccer Drills- Tunnel Passing
- Objective: Develop accurate passing.
- Setup: Players form a tunnel by standing with their legs apart.
- Activity: Players take turns passing the ball through the tunnel without hitting any “walls” (legs).
- Variation: Create multiple tunnels or increase the length of the tunnel.
Soccer Drill- Soccer Bowling
- Objective: Enhance precision kicking.
- Setup: Set up “pins” using cones.
- Activity: Players take turns trying to knock down the pins with the soccer ball.
- Variation: Vary the distance and introduce obstacles.
Soccer Drill- Magic Square
- Objective: Focus on ball control and awareness.
- Setup: Define a square area with four zones using cones.
- Activity: Players dribble in their zone. On the coach’s signal, players switch to a different zone without losing control of their ball or colliding with others.
- Variation: Call out player names to switch zones.
Soccer Drill- Obstacle Course
- Objective: Develop various skills.
- Setup: Set up a course with cones, hurdles, and gates.
- Activity: Players navigate through the course focusing on dribbling, jumping, and maintaining ball control.
- Variation: Time trials or relay races.
